Sleepy Whisper

Most baby monitors come as a camera, an account you have to make, and somebody else’s server. That server is the weak point. It can be broken into, it stops working the moment your internet does, and it quietly turns your baby’s room into someone else’s data.

The thing we kept coming back to

Most parents already own two phones. If the old one could host the connection itself, the whole middle of the system just disappears. No hub to buy, no account, nothing to set up.

What we built

The phone by the cot runs a small server and sends the video straight to your other phone over the same Wi-Fi. A hotspot works too, which matters during a brownout. To pair them you get an address, a code that changes every few minutes, and a QR that carries both. The second phone needs no app at all. Any browser will do.

The nursery screen goes dark so it does not light up the room. Noise and motion alerts show you the actual room level, so you can set the threshold by eye instead of guessing. The volume goes past 100%, because sometimes you need to hear very quiet breathing.

Being straight about what it is

Sleepy Whisper is not a medical device. It does not track breathing or vital signs. It shows you your room and lets you hear it, and that is all. The app says exactly that on one of its own screens, and we would put it there again.
